When ‘blizzard warnings’ are posted, folks at the SNOW Sports Museum get excited. We’re all about the snow sports, obviously, so piles and piles of incoming snow gets everyone all fired up to ski, ride, skate, and stride!
Did you know that since 2008 NOAA Reno has only posted six “Blizzard Warnings”? The more common “Winter Storm Warning” is usually enough to put skiers and riders on Full Powder Alert. But this incoming storm is now officially being labeled a “blizzard” by NOAA standards, which means the stoke-level is at a 10. Forecasts range from two-to-three-feet at lake level to as much as seven feet up on the Sierra summit. It’s ON, people!
We love snow, but there are short-range downsides to heavy snow coming in all at once, including potential road closures – CHP is urging people NOT to travel over I-80 and Rt. 50 on Wednesday and Thursday – and extreme avalanche danger in the backcountry and at the resorts. Expect some resort closures due to wind and avalanche danger on Wednesday and Thursday and delayed openings on Friday at many of the resorts due to avalanche mitigation.
