Mark your calendars: The 2018 Olympic Winter Games are scheduled for February 9 to 25 in Pyeongchang, South Korea!
Where in the world is Pyeongchang? Great question. First things first, Pyeongchang is pronounced PYUHNG’-chahng. It is approximately 112 miles east of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, or about a three hour journey from Seoul’s Kimpo Airport. A high-speed train is in the works, which will shorten travel to time to an hour.
Pyeongchang is located in Gangwon province in the northern part of the country. Nestled in the Taebaek Mountains, it is home to the year-round Alpensia ski resort. Pyeongchang is the smallest city to host an Olympic Games, summer or winter, since the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway.
What I love most is getting to know the athletes that we’ll cheer on next winter.
And, let’s not forget the new events that will be featured in Pyeongchang. These new competitions are making a debut in 2018 include: snowboarding big air, curling mixed doubles, speed skating mass start and Alpine skiing team.
Until then… let’s get our cow bells out and get ready for two historic events happening right here in the USA. Come out and support the athletes at the Audi FIS World Cup in Squaw Valley, California from March 10 and 11 featuring women’s Giant Slalom and Slalom races. (Shout out to Julie Mancuso, our hometown hero!)
And the following week, catch the Audi FIS World Cup Finals in Aspen, Colorado from March 15 to 19 will feature men’s and women’s Downhill, Giant Slalom, Slalom, Super G.
Wrapping up the season, Sugarloaf, Maine shots the U.S. Alpine Championships from March 25 to 28 featuring men’s and women’s Alpine Combined, Giant Slalom, Slalom, and Super G.
